Club of the Year

Congratulations to the Rose Float Team for winning the Educational Interest Council's (EIC) Club of the Year Award! This award is rewarded to any of the clubs that have existed in the past and have successfully re-chartered this year. As EIC highlighted how Rose Float brought recognition to the university, Associated Students Incorporated (ASI) recognized Rose Float as well. Rose Float was recognized for being most spirited during Relay 4 Life, and for being all around active and inclusive on campus.

Mayor Walter Allen III Commends Cal Poly Rose Float

Mayor Walter Allen III (former Cal Poly Pomona alum) presented Cal Poly Pomona Rose Float with a proclamation during February 16th’s city council meeting.  Mayor Allen declared February 16 as “Cal Poly Pomona Rose Float Appreciation Day” in the city of Covina.  Additionally, he states in the proclamation, “I furthermore urge all residents of Covina to watch for notification of the arrival of the 2011 Cal Poly Rose Parade float, and plan to join me and my colleagues on the Covina City Council to be on hand to cheer the team and welcome them as they pass through Covina.”

During the "Move Back" trip on the night of January 3, 2010, Mayor Allen met Rose Float and greeted us on behalf of Covina. He chatted with us, ate a hamburger, shared stories of when he was a student (former president of ASI student government), and took pictures with us next to our float.

It was very exciting for Rose Float to be there.  During our recognition Mayor Allen asked any alumni of CPP to stand up and invited them to also be in the picture with Rose Float.  It was nice to see so many graduates from our campus.

Those present to accept the proclamation were:

Ron Simons

Marla Franco

Kevin Hsu, 2009-2010 Committee Chair

Mary Weaver, 2010-2011 Committee Chair

Andrew Phan, 2009-2010 Club President

Justine Budisantoso, 2010-2011 Club President

Rendering Release

The new year (or, 2010-2011 season) is underway after the Cal Poly Rose Float team has chosen the winning entry design for the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade. The winning entry features a troop of children building a rocket ready to Blast Off!! The imaginative float includes a planet and a rocket floating on clouds as children work together to assemble the rocket of their dreams. The design is an interpretation of the 2010-2011 Tournament of Roses Parade theme, “Building Memories, Friendships, and Dreams.” The concept was chosen during this year’s concept contest where 98 entries were submitted. Cal Poly Pomona and San Luis Obispo teamed up, and after four rounds of voting, chose their top five concepts, which were submitted to the Tournament of Roses for final approval. Three out of the five concepts were approved. After the approval process, the Rose Float Leadership Teams continued to develop the top concept. The next stage of the process consists of the two campuses coming together to hold the Design/ Deco/ Construction (DDC) meeting where the two campuses will decide the elements of the float, including how many characters are present on the float, what colors elements are, as well as what elements are animated. All details will be submitted to an independent artist for the rendering; the official drawing of what the float will look like.  [The preliminary design can be seen below.]

Thank you to everyone who submitted a concept for this year’s contest. The Cal Poly Concept Contest is open to both students and non-students. The winning entry for the 2011 concept contest was submitted by Michael Roussin, a third year mechanical engineering student from Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal Poly Pomona Rose Float will continually update their website with more information.
